MLSA Sponsors the Excursion to the North of Spain, which includes the opportunity to see Running of the bulls in Pamplona; beach in Biarritz, France, with stops in Burgos and Medinaceli.
This program offers 8 credits and is an undergraduate program, except for the most advanced course that is dual level: graduate/undergraduate. The following courses are offered:
BEGINNING SPANISH 101 & 102 (ESPAÑOL INICIAL) - 9:00 AM - 1:10 PM
8 credits (semester). Undergraduate. First and second semester of college.
For students with no previous knowledge of Spanish. They will study the basic structure of Spanish with emphasis on speaking.
The daily schedule is divided as follows:
BEGINNING SPANISH 203 & 204 (ESPAÑOL ELEMENTAL) - 9:00 AM - 1:10 PM
8 credits (semester). Undergraduate. Third and fourth semester of college.
Builds upon the skills acquired in Spanish 101 & 102.
INTERMEDIATE SPANISH 300 (ESPAÑOL INTERMEDIO)
8 credits (semester). Undergraduate.
Further development of spoken and written Spanish and introduction to Spanish culture with readings, lectures, and videos on literary and cultural topics.
ADVANCED SPANISH 400 (ESPAÑOL AVANZADO) - 9:00 AM - 1:10 PM
8 credits (semester). Undergraduate.
Intensive practice in advanced Spanish Grammar, syntax, and idiomatic constructions to develop greater fluency and improvement in oral comprehension, conversation skills, and composition. As part of the course, an overview of the culture and civilization of Spain, through a series of lectures on the historical, philosophical, political, literary, and artistic development of Spain will take place.

4 credits (semester). Undergraduate.
Further development and application of more complex grammar and vocabulary in writing. Theory, practice, and evaluation. To be taken in conjunction with SPAN 430 or SPAN 451.
SPAN 420 ADVANCED CONVERSATION - 11:10 AM

Continued and more advanced practice in Spanish conversation through study of contemporary culture as a basis for speaking. To be taken in conjunction with SPAN 430 or SPAN 451.
SPAN 430 INTRODUCTION TO SPANISH CULTURE - 9:00 AM
4 credits (semester). Undergraduate.
This course will offer a panoramic perspective of spanish cultural heritage and the development of social and political institutions. Includes studies of different facets of Spanish contemporary culture not normally covered in regular course offerings. To be taken in conjunction with SPAN 320 or SPAN 420.
NOT OFFERED IN 2022-SPAN 451 INTRODUCTION TO SPANISH LITERATURE - 9:00 AM
4 credits (semester). Undergraduate.
Familiarizes students with the literature of Spain from the beginning to the present with emphasis on contemporary 20th century Spanish literature. To be taken in conjunction with SPAN 320 or SPAN 420.
ADVANCED SPANISH 500 (ESPAÑOL SUPERIOR) - 9:00 AM - 1:10 PM
8 credits (semester). Dual level: Undergraduate/Graduate.
Intensive practice in perfecting Spanish Grammar, syntax, idiomatic constructions to develop native-like fluency and improvement in oral comprehension, conversation skills, and composition. As part of the course, an overview of the culture and civilization of Spain, through a series of lectures on the historical, philosophical, political, literary, and artistic development of Spain will take place. This course is for students with near native-like skills.
This program runs for the first two weeks of the four-week program. It offers 3-4 credits and is an undergraduate program, except for the most advanced course, SPAN 500, which is a dual level graduate and undergraduate course.

ADVANCED SPANISH 500 (ESPAÑOL SUPERIOR) - Dual Level
Intensive practice in perfecting Spanish Grammar, syntax, idiomatic constructions to develop native-like fluency and improvement in oral comprehension, conversation skills, and composition. As part of the course, an overview of the culture and civilization of Spain, through a series of lectures on the historical, philosophical, political, literary, and artistic development of Spain will take place. This course is for students with near native-like skills.
This program is divided into topics, with each one worth one academic credit. It is a 4-week program but students are allowed to attend, by request, the first two (primera quincena) or the last two weeks (segunda quincena). Students can choose from eight topics of SPAN 502 which focus on language, linguistics, and methodology or eight topics of SPAN 501 which focus on literature. There are sixteen total topics offered and students must select eight topics. Students can combine the topics in literature (501) with the topics in language/linguistics/ methodology (502) in any combination. Please note that the SPAN 501 and SPAN 502 courses are be interchangeable; however, the Programa Superior is not interchangeable with courses from the Programa General. Please note fees for 501-502 are graduate fees even if taken as an undergraduate.
SPAN 501: CURSOS MONOGRÁFICOS DE LITERATURA
This course concentrates on literature. Major works of classical and contemporary Spanish authors are studied.
SPAN 502: CURSOS MONOGRÁFICOS DE LENGUA, GRAMÁTICA, LINGUÍSTICA Y METODOLOGÍA
This program concentrates on the study of very advanced grammar, syntax, semantics, linguistics, methodology, and the Spanish language in its colloquial form.
